Definitely purchase tickets ahead online and print them out. Because lines are massive. Small cafeteria above the audio guide desk is hidden treasure. Cold drinks, coffee, small buffet with salad at lunch, desserts. No one there but staff and a few Japanese tourists. Definitely the place to rest and regroup. Armory is must see don't miss this. Audio guide is definitely worth 3 Euros. Palace is beautiful. They don't rush you and it never felt crowded except when groups pushed through.

Just get off the hop on hop off bus. Stops right next to it. Amazing place. Only 10€ well worth it. I would recommend getting the audio guide. Hire is 3€. However they do take a swipe of either a credit or debit card so have one handy if want to do. It made my walking tour with my husband so much more informative . Place is beautiful and has some lovely views of the local area. It took us about 2.5 hours to do.

It has a €10 entry fee, extra €3 for an audio guide or €4 for a guided tour. The line was minimal on a Tuesday around 11:30 A.M. We opted for the guided tour and it was well-worth it. We were blown away by the beauty of the palace and felt the guide’s commentary added value to the overall experience. If you enjoyed Versailles, you’d enjoy this as well. The interior is like a Disney fairytale palace. However... I was quite dismayed that the Armory wasn’t included in the guided tour & the information is only in Spanish. There are numbers if you buy the audio tour (which I may have considered for my boyfriend since he’s fascinated by medieval history and war). The palace gardens are nice but aren’t anything to write home about. They can be seen quickly.

The place was stunning such an amazing place. I love the armory with all the old military dress. I do recommend taking the tour of the kitchen. It is amazing to see how they made the palace function so many years ago. All the security is very friendly and helpful. For the price of admission it is well worth it. I would recommend it for young and old alike.

Another of the "must sees" on any visit to Madrid. Well worth getting there as early as possible to avoid the crowds and to enable you to make the most of your visit. We got there shortly after opening and walked straight in, but by the time we left an hour or so later queues were building up and it was a very hot day (no shade). Be aware rucksacks aren't allowed in, but lockers are available and you get your euro back. A one way system is in operation taking you from room to room. The palace has everything you would expect from a royal residence. Make sure you don't miss the armoury in the palace wing, it's well worth visiting and offers views over Madrid. Also nearby are the cathedral and the crypt, both worth visiting. The best views of the palace are to be had from the park a three hundred yards or so to the right of the palace as you look at it. Our guide books indicated you could walk in the large park behind the palace, but we found this not to be the case when we visited. It was surrounded by a high fence with only one gate. This happened to be open, but a guard was turning everyone away.
