tl;dr: Great coffee, short wait, smells great because they literally roast next to you. Berlin is one of my favourite places for coffee. Within Berlin, I hold a very special place in my heart for The Barn. I originally got in contact with their roasts in Budapest, because they deliver excellent coffee to a place called addicted2caffeine (also highly recommend). Since then I am in love with the roasts that they make and deliver. The place has a great atmosphere, it smells like roasted coffee beans and it sounds like an old factory with all the machines working in the background.

The barn got so caught up in their perceived greatness that they lost track of what really counts: good coffee served by friendly qualified stuff. The place itself feels sterile and artificial. Last time I visited, the coffee tasted horrible. There's certainly a limit to how light you can roast a blend to still harmonize with milk and that limit was definetely exceeded with the mess of a cappuccino I was served. I watched the barista refusing to take an order in German. How hard is it to learn the German word for Latte when you work in a Berlin coffee shop? There's tons of places in town nowadays where you get excellent coffee. This isn't one of them.

I personally don't drink coffee, but I know from coffee lovers that their coffee is great. The place is interesting because you are basically sitting in the room where the rosters are. Smells delicious. The choice of cakes and sandwiches is not big, but decent. If you have any food restrictions - that's not your place and no no-milk options. This is where the first star vanishes. And the second goes for the sitting options - you basically sit with the rest of the customers - there is no privacy what so ever. If even one person is louder the whole place is filled with their conversation ... But if you have luck that won't happen and you will be served tasty tea and coffee by a very friendly staff. The place is easily reached by the U2 metro or tram.

I wanted to go there till I saw a no strollers sign on the door. Such a discriminating place. I then read news about a woman who has been sent out of the place because she wanted to breastfeed her baby. I did not buy a coffe would never ever go there.

I had a bad taste in my mouth walking in to this place: the signs on the door say no dogs (this is Berlin...), no WC (great.), no strollers (!?) including a huge barrier that prevents anything the size of a stroller from getting in. I guess those in wheelchairs or have walking aids are also not welcomed. There is more than enough room inside for larger items except all the space is taken up by "decor" which consists of gigantic sacks of what I guess are coffee beans which make the place look like a war zone and a huge table in the middle selling their bags of coffee. After perusing the menu and being sorely disappointed by seeing NYC level prices (6 euros + extra for milk!? for a pour-over coffee!?) I walked out and refused to give my business. I hope The Barn realizes how many people they are ostracizing from even trying out their coffee.
